Homer's The Iliad & The Odyssey - Homer (between 8 century B.C.E and 12 century B.C.E?) : The identity of Homer is not accurately known. His works do reflect "Greek Thought". This would be a help for bible students who are studying Greek influence during the time of Jesus Christ (Hellenization). This will help to understand the types of ideas the early church had to contend with. The Iliad is a powerful, beautiful, and awe-inspiring work of ancient Greece. It combines the horridness and sometimes mundaneness of war into a epic poem filled with art, illustrious descriptions, and a myriad of wonderful literary images. The Odyssey is a magnificient piece of literature that we find absolutely spectacular in the fact of its potential for helping us understand pre-history of many ancient cultures, and because of the fact that it is so well written and perhaps one of the first "books" (epics) ever written down. |

KJB AV1611 Preface - The Translators of the King James Bible Preface to the reader. [Edward W. Bihary rebuilt this addon after noticing that the original addon that was submitted contained some errors. Here is what Ed mentioned about the errors: The version of the King James translator's preface "The Translators to the Reader" that is contained on your web site I have found to be in error. It says, for example, "The best things have been culminated", instead of "The best things have been calumniated". "Culminated" means completed or climaxed. "Calumniated" means to make false or malicious statements about, or slander. The meanings are quite different! The context is that they are answering the accusations, or calumniations, of their critics; not that they are proclaiming the completion of their work! There are other things of this nature as well. Also, the Greek text has been omitted, with notes indicating that the Greek was omitted. I don't know the source of these errors, but identical versions are circulating the Internet.] |
